Pros & Cons
NotebookLM
- Genuinely permanently free with no trial window, credit card, or expiry required
- Free tier limits (100 notebooks, 50 sources each) are generous for most individual use
- Google Workspace Business Standard and above include Plus-tier access at no additional cost
- Cannot be purchased standalone — paid tiers require a Google AI subscription, Workspace plan, or Cloud Enterprise license
- Free tier’s 3 Audio Overviews/day and 50 chat questions/day may be limiting for heavy daily use
- Recently renamed (July 2026), which may cause some confusion given its long-standing "NotebookLM" branding
Bing Copilot Search
- Built directly into widely used Microsoft products, requiring no separate signup
- Provides source citations for verifying synthesized answers
- One of the most widely distributed AI search experiences by sheer reach
- Dedicated answer engines have iterated faster on citation quality and search-specific behavior
- Built-in distribution doesn’t necessarily mean best-in-class search capability
- Worth comparing directly against specialized AI search tools if search quality is the priority
