Pros & Cons
Photomath
- Genuinely unlimited basic step-by-step solutions on the free plan with no account required
- Continues operating as a standalone, well-maintained product following the Google acquisition
- Annual plan offers roughly 50% savings over monthly billing
- Animated tutorials and textbook-matched solutions require the $9.99/month Plus tier
- Basic free solutions may not provide the deeper conceptual understanding some students need
- Textbook matching depends on Photomath’s coverage of the specific textbook used
ALEKS
- Diagnostic-first approach targets real knowledge gaps rather than reactive Q&A
- Long track record in institutional math education settings
- Gives instructors clear visibility into individual student progress
- Primarily sold to institutions rather than available as a simple individual subscription
- Focused specifically on math, not a general-subject tutoring tool
- Requires institutional buy-in to integrate into a course properly
