What Is Hookpad AI?
Hookpad, from Hooktheory, is a songwriting and music composition tool combining a magic chord palette, 500+ instruments, MIDI/MP3 export, recording, and sheet music, with 2026 pricing running a free tier for basic use, Standard at $7.99/month, a Lifetime plan at $199 one-time, and Aria (Hookpad's generative AI songwriting add-on that suggests chords and melodies) at an additional $14.99/month on top of a paid plan.
Its Lifetime option is genuinely notable in a category dominated by subscription pricing: a one-time $199 payment provides every Standard feature without a recurring bill, appealing specifically to songwriters wanting to avoid ongoing subscription costs for a tool they plan to use long-term — a meaningful alternative that few competitors in the music composition space offer as cleanly.
It's aimed at songwriters wanting music theory-grounded composition tools, with Aria's AI-generated chord and melody suggestions available as a genuinely optional add-on rather than a required core feature, letting users choose whether they want AI assistance layered on top of the core composition tools.
