What Is Leonardo AI?
Leonardo AI is an AI image generation platform acquired by Canva in a cash-and-stock deal announced July 29, 2024, but running as an independent consumer product with its own token-metered plans rather than folding into Canva subscriptions — while Leonardo's models simultaneously power Canva's Magic Studio features. Pricing runs Free ($0), Essential ($12/month), Premium ($30/month), and Ultimate ($60/month), with up to 20% off on annual billing.
A genuinely useful cross-product detail worth knowing: Canva Business subscribers already have Leonardo's Essential tier included, making it the cheapest path to a paid Leonardo tier for anyone already using Canva Business. In 2025, plans consolidated into Solo (Free/Essential/Premium/Ultimate), Team (Starter/Growth), and API tiers, with a single token currency now metering image, video, design, and motion generation under "one subscription, all platforms" — and Premium/Ultimate gained unlimited relaxed generation for selected first-party models.
It's aimed at creators wanting AI image generation with genuine flexibility across models and generation types, with Canva Business subscribers getting a real cost advantage since Essential-tier Leonardo access is already included in their existing subscription.
