What Is Notion AI?
Notion AI underwent a significant restructuring, effective May 2025: the previous standalone $10/month AI add-on was retired, and full Notion AI now lives exclusively on the Business plan ($20/user/month annual, $24/month monthly) — Free and Plus ($10/user/month annual) tiers get only a limited trial rather than genuine ongoing access. Business unlocks the full 2026 AI suite: Notion Agent, Notion AI search, AI Meeting Notes, and Enterprise Search.
A genuinely important recent cost-mechanics change worth understanding before relying on Custom Agents: starting May 4, 2026, Custom Agents began consuming credits, priced at $10 per 1,000 Notion credits (billed monthly, no rollover) on top of whatever Business or Enterprise plan you're already paying for — meaning heavy Custom Agent usage adds a real, separate ongoing cost beyond the base per-seat price.
It's aimed at teams wanting full AI capabilities integrated into their Notion workspace, with the critical detail that genuine Notion AI access now requires the $20/user/month Business tier at minimum — Free and Plus users only get a limited trial rather than real ongoing AI functionality, a significant shift from the earlier add-on model. Notion AI Pros & Limitations
What We Like
- Full AI suite (Notion Agent, AI search, Meeting Notes, Enterprise Search) is genuinely comprehensive once on Business
- Consolidating AI into one tier (rather than a confusing add-on) simplifies the overall pricing structure
- Custom Agents provide flexible, credit-based scaling for agent-specific usage needs
Limitations
- Free and Plus tiers only get a limited AI trial, not genuine ongoing access — Business ($20/user/month) is required
- Custom Agent credits ($10/1,000, no rollover) add a real separate cost on top of the base Business/Enterprise price
- The May 2025 retirement of the standalone $10 AI add-on removed a lower-cost path to AI access on cheaper tiers

Our Take
Notion AI's consolidation onto the Business tier genuinely simplifies what was a confusing add-on model, but it means Free and Plus users get only a trial, not real ongoing access.
Budget separately for Custom Agent credits if using that feature, since the $10/1,000-credit billing (with no rollover) adds a real cost beyond the base per-seat price.
