What Is edX Xpert?
Xpert is edX's built-in AI tutor and assistant, available across many courses on the platform to summarize video lectures and text material, break down complex concepts, answer follow-up questions, recommend modules for review, and generate practice tests. A key detail worth understanding upfront: Xpert isn't a separately priced product — access is included as a feature on many courses, meaning you pay for the underlying edX course, verified certificate, or degree program rather than purchasing AI tutoring separately.
Since 2U's acquisition of edX, the company has invested heavily in AI tutoring capabilities, with Xpert functioning as a genuine personal tutor layer on top of existing course content rather than a bolted-on chatbot — helping students navigate video lectures and text material more efficiently by providing on-demand summaries and explanations tailored to their specific questions. edX itself offers free course auditing for most content, with verified certificates starting at $50 and full degree programs ranging up to $25,000.
It's aimed at edX learners wanting AI-assisted study support integrated directly into their course experience, with Xpert's availability depending on which specific course, certificate, or degree program you're enrolled in rather than being a standalone purchase. See our Education tools directory for related AI tutoring tools like Coursera Coach.
