What Is Prequel?
Prequel is a mobile photo and video editing app offering AI-powered effects, filters, retouching, and templates, including AI features that generate profile pictures and transform selfies or portraits. Pricing runs a weekly subscription at $7.99/week or an annual plan at $34.99/year (Prequel Gold), with new users eligible for a free trial; the free version caps export quality at 1080p and shows frequent ads, with full manual editing tools requiring the Gold subscription.
The stark contrast between the $7.99/week and $34.99/year pricing options is worth noting explicitly: annual billing works out to roughly $0.67/week, a substantial discount over weekly billing that anyone planning ongoing use should take advantage of rather than defaulting to the weekly rate.
It's aimed at mobile creators wanting AI-powered aesthetic filters, effects, and portrait transformation tools, with the annual Gold plan being the clearly more economical choice for anyone using the app regularly rather than the weekly subscription, which is priced for occasional or trial use. Prequel's pricing gap between weekly ($7.99/week, roughly $415/year) and annual ($34.99/year) billing is substantial — anyone planning regular use should switch to annual immediately rather than defaulting to weekly.
The free tier's 1080p cap and ad load make it best suited for occasional use rather than a serious ongoing editing workflow.
