What Is Amazon SageMaker?
Amazon SageMaker is AWS's managed service for building, training and deploying machine learning models, now branded SageMaker AI alongside Unified Studio. Third-party guides, not the AWS pricing page, say the Studio interface and Unified Studio themselves carry no direct charge, with billing for the underlying AWS services consumed. The free tier is short: reports describe 250 hours a month of an ml.t3.medium Studio notebook instance for the first two months, not the usual 12, though one guide also lists 50 hours of ml.m5.xlarge training and 125 hours of hosting, which other sources omit. Unified Studio has an always-free set of core requests covering domain, project and user management.
Compute is billed per instance-hour. Reported examples range from about $0.05 an hour for ml.t3.medium to about $0.7364 for ml.g4dn.xlarge, with ml.m5.xlarge at $0.23 in US East, and GPU instances such as ml.p3.2xlarge can exceed $3.80 an hour. The bigger trap is idle cost: one ml.g5.xlarge real-time endpoint in us-east-1 costs $1.408 an hour, about $1,028 a month if left running, because endpoints bill whether or not they receive traffic, notebooks bill while open, and EBS storage continues after instances stop. One source lists Unified Studio catalog charges of $10 per 100,000 requests after 4,000 free per month. Always confirm on AWS's pages.
SageMaker suits teams already on AWS that want an end-to-end managed ML platform. Compare Vertex AI, Azure Machine Learning and Kubeflow. Browse the MLOps & Infrastructure tools directory for more.
