What Is AutoGen?
AutoGen is Microsoft's open-source framework for multi-agent conversations and workflows. Microsoft moved the original project into maintenance mode in October 2025, according to Atlan and aiwiki, meaning it gets bug and security fixes but no new features, although one comparison page says its maintenance-status claim is unverified against Microsoft's own documentation. Microsoft Agent Framework 1.0 reached general availability on April 3, 2026, combining AutoGen's orchestration ideas with Semantic Kernel's enterprise features, and one page lists its licence as MIT.
A community fork exists. AutoGen's original creators, Chi Wang and Qingyun Wu, left Microsoft in late 2024 and forked the AutoGen 0.2 codebase as AG2, which Vantaige reports was relicensed under Apache 2.0, with ChatForest listing the latest release as v0.12.2 from May 1, 2026 and a stated path to v1.0. Star counts vary between sources, from about 4.5k to 4.9k for AG2 and roughly 57k to 60k or more for AutoGen. If you are starting a new project, check whether Microsoft Agent Framework or AG2 fits better than the original package. AutoGen itself is free to use under open-source terms.
AutoGen suits researchers and developers already invested in it. Compare CrewAI, LangGraph and Semantic Kernel. Browse the AI Agents & Automation tools directory for more.
