Defog.ai builds open-source text-to-SQL models and tooling, best known for SQLCoder. The GitHub repo says the code is Apache 2.0 while the model weights are under CC BY-SA 4.0. The licence summary says you can use and modify the model for any purpose including commercial use, but modified weights, such as fine-tuned ones, must be open-sourced under the same licence terms. The SQLCoder-70B model card lists CC-BY-SA-4.0, and says it was developed by Defog, Inc, fine-tuned from CodeLlama-70B, and the Llama-3 8B variant is also CC-BY-SA-4.0. A 2026 comparison describes SQLCoder-7B-2 the same way and flags that fine-tunes must be re-shared, and I found no evidence Defog has changed these terms.

No official Defog pricing for SQLCoder turned up. The only cost figure is from a third-party host: Replicate estimates about $0.00098 per run, and notes the model can also run on your own computer with Docker. Most sources date from 2023 to 2024, so the commercial offering, if any, was not verified. Check defog.ai for hosted products or support.

Defog suits teams that want to run text-to-SQL privately on their own hardware, avoiding sending schema and data to a third-party API.
