What Is Duolingo AI?
Duolingo's core app uses AI to personalize language lessons, generate conversation practice, and provide instant feedback across its free and Super-tier language learning experience. Its January 2026 update made "Explain My Answer" — AI-generated explanations of why an answer was right or wrong — free for all users across Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Portuguese, Italian, and Korean courses, a feature that used to be exclusive to the pricier Max tier.
That change is worth understanding when evaluating whether to upgrade beyond the free or Super tiers: since AI-generated answer explanations are now broadly free, the remaining AI-specific value proposition of the pricier Duolingo Max tier has shifted specifically toward AI speaking practice (Roleplay and Video Call features) rather than explanations, which is a meaningful repositioning of what you're actually paying extra for.
It's aimed at language learners wanting AI-personalized lessons and instant feedback, with the core AI features (including answer explanations) now accessible without needing the pricier Max subscription — see Duolingo Max specifically if you want AI conversation roleplay practice beyond what's now free. Our Take
Duolingo's January 2026 move to make Explain My Answer free for most learners is a genuinely significant value shift, reducing the case for upgrading purely for AI explanations.
Evaluate Duolingo Max specifically for its AI speaking practice features now, since that's the real remaining differentiator rather than answer explanations.
