What Is Duolingo Max?
Duolingo Max is Duolingo's premium AI-powered tier, priced around $167.99/year (roughly double Super's mid-$80s-to-mid-$90s annual pricing), adding two AI-specific features on top of everything in Super: Roleplay (open-ended conversation practice with AI characters) and Video Call conversation practice. Its value proposition shifted meaningfully in January 2026 when "Explain My Answer" — AI-generated answer explanations that used to be Max-exclusive — became free for all users across several major languages, leaving Roleplay and Video Call as the primary remaining reasons to pay for Max specifically.
A limitation worth knowing honestly before subscribing: Max's Video Call conversations currently last only about 30 seconds and lack pronunciation scoring, a meaningfully limited implementation compared to what a dedicated conversation-practice-focused tool might offer — worth setting realistic expectations for before paying roughly double Super's price specifically for that feature.
It's aimed at language learners specifically wanting AI conversation and roleplay practice beyond Duolingo's free/Super tier features, with the value calculation now resting almost entirely on how much you'll actually use Roleplay and Video Call given their current limitations. See the main Duolingo AI listing for the core app's broader (and increasingly free) AI features.

Frequently Asked Questions

Roleplay (open-ended AI conversation practice) and Video Call, on top of everything included in Super.
How long do Video Call conversations last?
Currently about 30 seconds, and they lack pronunciation scoring.
Is Max still worth it after Explain My Answer went free?
Its value now rests mainly on Roleplay and Video Call, since answer explanations are free for most users as of January 2026.
How much does Duolingo Max cost?
Roughly $167.99/year, about double Super’s annual price.
Our Take
Duolingo Max's value proposition has genuinely narrowed since Explain My Answer went free — it's now specifically a pay-for-AI-speaking-practice upgrade rather than a broader AI feature bundle.
Consider Video Call's current 30-second limitation and lack of pronunciation scoring honestly before paying roughly double Super's price for it.
