What Is Readlang?
Readlang is a language-learning tool for translating words and phrases while you read web pages and texts, created by Steve Ridout, a former Duolingo engineer. Readlang's own pricing page, read directly, shows dollar prices with no currency code. Free is $0 with unlimited single-word translations, 10 phrase translations a day of up to 6 words, 10 context explanations a day, no streak repairs and no audio storage. Premium is $6 a month or $48 a year with unlimited word and phrase translations up to 12 words, unlimited context explanations, flashcards from specific books, 2 streak repairs a month, 10 hours of audio storage and high-quality voices for words and phrases. Premium Plus is $15 a month or $120 a year and adds 200 hours of audio storage, high-quality voices for whole texts and a more advanced AI model. Subscriptions are recurring and can be cancelled at any time, with no trial stated.
The About page describes AI-based explanations for new words and phrases, and context explanations are unlimited on paid tiers. Footnotes list about 70 languages for audio upload and transcription and about 100 for high-quality voices, though translation languages are not enumerated. Readlang runs on the web with a Chrome extension and a bookmarklet, and the iOS and Android link points to a forum post about adding it to the home screen, so a native app may not exist. The footer reads Readlang 2026 with a blog and help forum, and no company is named. Free limits on phrases and explanations are tight, so heavy readers will want Premium.
Readlang suits readers who learn by reading real texts and building flashcards. Compare LingQ, Clozemaster and Lingvist. Browse the Translation & Language tools directory for more.
