What Is Gaussian Splatting?
3D Gaussian Splatting is a research method for real-time rendering of captured 3D scenes. It was introduced by Kerbl, Kopanas, Leimkuhler and Drettakis at SIGGRAPH 2023 and published in ACM Transactions on Graphics volume 42, issue 4 (arXiv:2308.04079). The approach represents scenes with 3D Gaussians and reaches real-time novel-view synthesis of at least 30 frames per second at 1080p. A third-party listing ranks it the most influential SIGGRAPH 2023 paper, and it has fuelled many apps and tools.
The official implementation is in the INRIA GRAPHDECO GitHub repository, which also provides reference images and pre-trained models. Licence terms matter. A third-party Unity project's README says the official training software is for educational, academic and non-commercial purposes, and that commercial use requires a licence from INRIA, and it warns that a permissive viewer licence still leaves open how the splat files were produced. The LICENSE file was not retrieved, so read it in the repository before any commercial work. Many commercial and open tools implement their own versions.
Gaussian Splatting suits researchers, developers and technical artists exploring photoreal capture. Compare Nerfstudio, KIRI Engine and Luma AI. Browse the 3D & Games tools directory for more.
