What it is
Granite 4.2, released on August 25, 2026, is IBM's latest open model family: dense 3B, 8B and 30B decoder-only models under Apache 2.0, with a thinking switch so one checkpoint can reason step by step or answer directly. They are aimed at agent work — tool calling, multi-step software engineering and terminal tasks — and support 12 languages with a shipped context of 131,072 tokens (IBM claims a 512K extension).
Where this information comes from
Benchmarks are for the 30B model as reported at launch. Release dates, context windows and benchmark scores are vendor-reported unless stated, and harnesses differ between labs, so treat the numbers as indicative.
Notable traits
- Apache 2.0 and small enough to self-host.
- Business and coding focus, with a long Granite Code lineage.
- Thinking switch for reasoning on demand.
