What Is OpenVINO?
OpenVINO is Intel's toolkit for optimizing and deploying AI inference on CPUs, GPUs and NPUs. It is free to use, and I did not confirm the licence in my search results, so check the repository's LICENSE file before relying on Apache 2.0. The most recent toolkit release found is 2026.4, dated September 16, 2026 in the release notes. Its GenAI additions include multi-token prediction speculative decoding for Gemma 4, Qwen3.5 and Qwen3.6, with DFlash acceleration for Qwen models on GPUs in preview, plus ASRPipeline support in the Node.js API. The separate OpenVINO GenAI repository has 2026.4.1.0, tagged October 1, which is a version bump with no features listed.
The 2026 cadence has been steady: 2026.3 on August 4 added image-to-image and inpainting pipelines to the GenAI API, and 2026.2 added Gemma 4 E2B and E4B support. Dates in the sources do not always line up, so use the official tags for exact dates. OpenVINO has no licence fee in the sources I saw, and the cost is whichever Intel or other hardware you deploy on. It is strongest on Intel silicon, so teams on NVIDIA-only fleets usually reach for other runtimes.
OpenVINO suits developers shipping optimized inference to Intel-based PCs, edge devices and servers, including local generative AI. Compare ONNX Runtime, llama.cpp and TensorRT-LLM. Browse the MLOps & Infrastructure tools directory for more.
