What Is Steel?
Steel is a browser infrastructure API that lets AI agents run web sessions in the cloud. Steel's own pricing page, read directly, shows Launch at $0 a month plus usage with a one-time $30 of credits, 10 concurrent browser sessions of up to 15 minutes, up to three seats and email and community support, no card needed. Scale is $250 a month plus usage with $100 of credits every month, 100 concurrent sessions of up to an hour, dedicated IPs at $5 each, a dedicated Slack channel and a HIPAA-ready BAA. Enterprise is custom with 1,000-plus concurrent sessions, stealth browser, reserved pools, 24-hour sessions, SLAs and SSO. Usage rates for Launch and Scale are $0.10 and $0.08 per browser hour, $10 and $6 per GB of proxy bandwidth, $3 and $1 per thousand CAPTCHA solves and $5 per thousand scrape calls.
Request limits are 60 a minute on Launch and 600 on Scale, with data retention of seven and 14 days. Products listed are Sessions, Profiles, Files, Extensions and a Credentials API, plus Steel Skills in the docs, and the page frames it as pay only for what your agents run. The site says it believes browser automation will be open source, with Steel Browser on GitHub showing about 7,900 stars, but the licence was not stated and not checked. No company, funding or acquisition details appeared. A changelog, blog and status page are linked, though I did not open them, and I saw no inactivity signs.
Steel suits developers building web-browsing agents who do not want to run headless browsers. Compare Browserbase, Hyperbrowser and Opera Neon. Browse the AI Agents & Automation tools directory for more.
