What Is Text Generation Inference?
Text Generation Inference, or TGI, is Hugging Face's toolkit for serving large language models. The most important fact is its status: the official docs say the project entered maintenance mode on December 11, 2025, so Hugging Face accepts only minor bug fixes, documentation improvements and lightweight maintenance. The GitHub repository was archived on March 21, 2026 and is now read-only. The final release found is v3.3.7, tagged December 19, 2025, which included the maintenance-mode announcement, and I found no later release. Hugging Face points new users toward vLLM, SGLang and local engines such as llama.cpp or MLX, noting that TGI helped start the movement for inference engines to rely on transformers model architectures.
The licence is Apache-2.0 today. One source notes TGI was briefly under a restrictive licence, HFOIL 1.0, in 2023, with releases up to v0.9.4 staying Apache 2.0; sources disagree on when that period ended, one saying it was reverted and another dating it from mid-2023 to April 2024, but both agree the current licence is Apache-2.0. TGI is free to run and you pay only for the GPUs. It still works for existing deployments, and Inference Endpoints on Hugging Face documents a TGI engine, but with an archived repo you should not expect new model support.
TGI suits teams already running it who need a stable setup, while new projects are better served elsewhere. Compare vLLM, llama.cpp and Hugging Face. Browse the MLOps & Infrastructure tools directory for more.
