What Is WhyLabs?
WhyLabs was an AI observability and data monitoring platform, and it is no longer sold commercially. Sources say Apple acquired the company, with the deal first public through an EU Digital Markets Act disclosure dated January 24. Most sources say January 2025, though GeekWire notes the timing suggests the deal came together in 2024, so check the EU filing for the year. Apple gets the right to make employment offers to certain Americas-based employees and a non-exclusive, perpetual licence to WhyLabs' intellectual property. The company is discontinuing operations and its commercial platform is no longer sold, so the hosted service may not be accessible.
What survives is open source. The full platform was released as open source, with code in the whylabs-oss repository, so you can run an instance yourself. The whylogs library continues under the Apache 2.0 licence, and the WhyLabs site describes it as an open standard for data logging that keeps supporting privacy-preserving monitoring. LangKit, a toolkit for monitoring LLMs, is also still on GitHub. Because the company is gone, do not expect vendor support or new features, and check each repository's activity before building on it. Some aggregator details, such as a founder's title or the deal's valuation, are inconsistent, so I have left them out.
WhyLabs now suits teams comfortable self-hosting open-source monitoring, or those maintaining existing whylogs pipelines. For a supported product, compare Arize AI, Evidently AI and Fiddler AI. Browse the MLOps & Infrastructure tools directory for more.
